Pokémon GO | Super Mega Raid Guide (2026) : Gym Map, Shields, Mega Energy & Rewards

What Are Super Mega Raids?

Super Mega Raid Overview

Super Mega Raid

Super Mega Raids are a new type of raid battle that is significantly more challenging than standard Mega Raids. They take place only at designated Gyms, and Trainers must rely on Mega-Evolved Pokémon to defeat these powerful raid bosses.

During battle, the boss will deploy multiple Shields. While these Shields are active, the boss gains 2× Attack and 4× Defense, making it nearly impossible to deal meaningful damage. Trainers must use their Mega-Evolved Pokémon to break the Shields before continuing the battle.

Each Trainer can destroy one Shield by using a Charged Attack with their Mega-Evolved Pokémon.

Once the required number of Shields has been destroyed, the boss becomes vulnerable again and can take normal damage. After defeating the raid boss, Trainers can catch its regular (pre-Mega Evolution) form, just like in standard Mega Raids.

Super Mega Raid Gym Locations

You can check the locations of Super Mega Raid Gyms using the Pokémon GO Map. Open the map and select “Super Mega Raid” from the menu to view all currently designated Gyms.

Unlike regular raids, Super Mega Raids do not appear at every Gym. They are limited to specific locations selected by Niantic.

Super Mega Raid Rewards: IV Floor & Mega Energy

Like standard raids, Super Mega Raids reward Trainers with a Pokémon encounter, item bundles, and Mega Energy.

IV Floor

  • Guaranteed minimum IVs: 10 / 10 / 10 (same as all other raid encounters)

Rewards

  • Standard raid item rewards
  • Mega Energy

Super Mega Raids award significantly more Mega Energy than regular Mega Raids.

  • Mega Energy Reward: 250–450
  • Faster raid completion results in more Mega Energy, so defeating the boss quickly is highly recommended.

Super Mega Raid Boss Shield Count

In Super Mega Raids, you can see how many Shields the boss uses by checking the Shield icon displayed in the Nearby Raids menu or on the raid lobby screen.

The Shield count also gives Trainers a rough estimate of the minimum number of prepared players needed to complete the raid.

Most Super Mega Raid bosses use 7–8 Shields, while Mega Mewtwo and Mega Dragonite are exceptions that use 10 Shields.

8Mega Victreebel, Mega Malamar, Mega Fanliks
7Mega Raichu, Mega Skarmory

To ensure a smooth and fast clear, bringing at least 10 Trainers with Mega-Evolved Pokémon is the safest strategy.

In practice, however, many players may not have a Mega-Evolved Pokémon ready, so having more participants is always recommended to improve your chances of success.

Important Notes for Super Mega Raids

Raid Boss Shields can only be broken by Mega-Evolved Pokémon. Since Primal Reversion Pokémon are not considered Mega-Evolved Pokémon, Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon cannot break Shields during Super Mega Raids.

As a result, Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon are not recommended for Super Mega Raids.

If they are unable to contribute to Shield breaking, their damage output after the Shields have been removed can actually be lower than even Slowbro or Cubone, making them a poor choice for these battles.
