Raichu first appeared in the original Pokémon Red & Green games and is the evolved form of Pikachu, the iconic mascot of the Pokémon franchise.
Despite evolving from the beloved Electric Mouse Pokémon, Raichu has long lived in Pikachu’s shadow due to Pikachu’s overwhelming popularity.
Many longtime players may remember Raichu primarily as Lt. Surge‘s signature Pokémon, but thanks to its status as Pikachu’s evolution, it has remained a recurring Pokémon throughout the anime and games.
As part of the franchise’s “main character” lineup, it even received an alternate regional form, Alolan Raichu, in Pokémon Sun & Moon.

Raichu finally receives Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Like Charizard and Mewtwo, it has two Mega forms—Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y—both remaining pure Electric-type Pokémon.
Mega Raichu X gains an additional tail and attacks by concentrating electricity into its enlarged glove-like fists while floating at high speed. Its Attack stat increases significantly, emphasizing physical combat.
Mega Raichu Y, on the other hand, amplifies its electrical power through its horn-like hair and elongated tail, resulting in a massive increase to its Special Attack.
If you look closely, Mega Raichu X resembles the original Raichu more, while Mega Raichu Y shares more visual similarities with Pikachu. Their overall designs also reflect the “X” and “Y” themes respectively.
Mega Raichu X vs. Y Stat Differences
As shown above, both Mega Evolutions receive similar overall stat increases. However, their stat distributions are very different.
Mega Raichu X gains boosts to both Attack and Defense, while Mega Raichu Y receives an enormous +146 increase to its Attack.
The reason this creates such a large performance gap in Pokémon GO lies in the game’s unique stat conversion formula. When converting stats from the main series, Pokémon GO primarily uses whichever is higher between a Pokémon’s Attack and Special Attack.

While simplified, this formula explains why Mega Raichu Y benefits much more from its massive Attack increase.
As a result, Mega Raichu Y achieves noticeably higher DPS than Mega Raichu X. The same principle also applies to Mega Mewtwo X/Y and Mega Charizard X/Y.

Raichu’s Raid and PvP Performance
As a pure Electric-type Pokémon with relatively modest base stats, Raichu has long been overshadowed by stronger Electric attackers such as Electivire and Mega Manectric. As power creep continued across generations, its role became increasingly limited.
The same was true in Pokémon GO. While Raichu found a niche in PvP thanks to moves such as Charm, Trailblaze, Surf, and Brick Break, the nerf to Charm unintentionally weakened one of its most viable strategies.
Mega Raichu X vs. Y DPS Comparison
The arrival of Mega Raichu is exciting news for longtime Raichu fans as well as players who primarily focus on raids.
As explained earlier, Mega Raichu Y gains +146 Attack than Mega Raichu X after Pokémon GO’s stat conversion, creating a much larger performance gap than many players might expect.

As you can see, excluding the currently unavailable Mega Zeraora, Mega Raichu Y becomes the strongest Mega Evolution Electric-type attacker in Pokémon GO.
Mega Raichu Y is particularly recommended because Thunder Shock is an excellent Fast Move for Party Play, allowing it to take full advantage of Party Power.

Although Regieleki with Lock-On remains exceptionally powerful in a full Party Play setup, Mega Raichu Y trails by only about 3–4%, even in four-player parties.
While its Defense is somewhat lower, the combination of Mega Evolution boosts and outstanding DPS makes Mega Raichu Y the better long-term investment.
A powerful Electric-type raid team would consist of Mega Raichu Y, Zeraora, and either Regieleki, Zekrom, or Xurkitree, allowing you to clear raids extremely quickly.
