Mimikyu is a Ghost/Fairy-type Pokémon originally discovered in the Alola region. Unlike most Pokémon, Mimikyu does not evolve and instead features two forms: Disguised Form and Busted Form.
Before its release in Pokémon GO, many players expected Mimikyu to receive powerful STAB options such as Charm and Shadow Ball. Unfortunately, both moves were removed prior to launch and replaced with Hex and Shadow Sneak, significantly limiting its potential as a raid attacker.
Fortunately, Mimikyu’s unique battle mechanic ensures that it remains one of the most interesting PvP Pokémon ever introduced.
How to Get Mimikyu and Shiny Availability
Mimikyu made its Pokémon GO debut during the April Fool’s event on April 1, 2026.
Its availability window was extremely short, and as of July 2026, Mimikyu cannot currently be obtained through wild encounters, raids, eggs, research tasks, or any other in-game method.
However, because Mimikyu was relatively common during its debut event, obtaining one through trading should not be particularly difficult.
As of this writing, Shiny Mimikyu has not yet been released in Pokémon GO.
Mimikyu’s Signature Mechanic: Disguise
In the main series Pokémon games, Mimikyu’s signature Ability, Disguise, allows it to absorb one attack while taking only minimal damage.
Pokémon GO adapts this mechanic in a way that makes Mimikyu exceptionally powerful in Trainer Battles.
When hit by an opponent’s Charged Attack, Mimikyu can completely negate the damage one time without consuming a Protect Shield. After activating Disguise, Mimikyu transforms into its Busted Form and suffers a one-stage Defense reduction.
This Defense debuff remains active for the remainder of the battle, even if Mimikyu switches out.
In practice, Disguise effectively grants Mimikyu access to what many players describe as a “third shield,” making it one of the strongest defensive mechanics ever introduced to GO Battle League.

Mimikyu’s raid performance is, frankly, terrible.
Its lack of powerful Ghost-type charged attacks leaves it far behind even mid-tier raid attackers. Unless you’re attempting a challenge run or showcasing a favorite Pokémon, there is essentially no scenario where Mimikyu should be used in raids.

Mimikyu in Great League and Ultra League
Mimikyu belongs to the same category of mechanic-driven Pokémon as Morpeko and Aegislash. Following the GO Battle League: New Beginnings balance update in June 2026, it became available for competitive play.
Despite possessing relatively average charged moves, Mimikyu’s signature Disguise mechanic allows it to dominate many matchups simply by forcing opponents to expend an additional Charged Attack.
Effectively having access to an extra shield dramatically changes battle dynamics and enables Mimikyu to overcome situations where other Pokémon would normally lose.
Its Ghost/Fairy typing further contributes to its success by providing:
- Excellent offensive coverage
- Numerous key resistances
- A valuable double resistance to Fighting-type attacks
- Only two weaknesses overall
As a result, Mimikyu immediately ranked among the strongest Pokémon in PvP simulations following its release.
The metagame quickly adapted, however, leading to increased usage of Dark- and Normal-type Pokémon capable of pressuring Mimikyu despite its Disguise mechanic.
Overall, Mimikyu appears to be one of the most influential Pokémon introduced to GO Battle League in recent years and is likely to remain a major threat unless future balance changes significantly weaken its impact.
Trainers considering Mimikyu for Ultra League should also be aware that it requires a substantial investment of XL Candy.
