How to Get Mewtwo?

Mewtwo is one of the most iconic Legendary Pokémon in the franchise, and that popularity carries over to Pokémon GO.

The Scopely team is well aware of its popularity, which is why Mewtwo Legendary Raids are held only on very rare occasions.

In recent years, Mewtwo has mostly been featured during regional live events as in-person-only raids, meaning Remote Raid Passes cannot be used.

Shadow Mewtwo

Shadow Mewtwo is the Shadow version of Mewtwo and is also extremely rare, appearing only during limited-time Shadow Legendary Raids.

Because it receives the Shadow bonus (1.2× Attack and approximately 0.8× Defense), Shadow Mewtwo becomes one of the strongest attackers in Pokémon GO.

Armored Mewtwo

  • Type: Psychic
  • Base Stats: Attack 182 / Defense 278 / HP 214
  • Max CP (Level 50): 3,603
  • Fast Moves: Confusion, Iron Tail
  • Charged Moves: Psystrike*, Dynamic Punch, Future Sight, Earthquake
  • Recommended Level for Ultra League (2,500 CP): Level 27–32.5
  • Last Available: July 2019, February 2020

Armored Mewtwo was released exclusively in Legendary Raids during the Mewtwo Strikes Back EVOLUTION movie celebration in July 2019 and later returned during the Pokémon Day event in February 2020.

Since it has not returned for over four years, it remains one of the rarest Pokémon in the game.

True to its armored appearance, Armored Mewtwo trades much of Mewtwo’s offensive power for exceptional bulk, making it a surprisingly effective Pokémon in the Ultra League.

Unlike regular Mewtwo, Armored Mewtwo has its own unique movepool, learning moves such as Future Sight, Dynamic Punch, Rock Slide, and Earthquake.

Mega Mewtwo X & Y

Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y are making their Pokémon GO debut in Super Mega Raids during GO Fest.

You need 10+ players with Mega-evolved Pokemon to break all shields.

Since these raids feature 10 Shield Phases, players will likely need at least 10 Trainers with Mega-Evolved Pokémon to successfully clear the raid.

During GO Fest:

  • Mega Mewtwo X raids reward Mewtwo with Counter.
  • Mega Mewtwo Y raids reward Mewtwo with Psystrike.

Interestingly, Mega Mewtwo X and Y do not follow Pokémon GO’s usual stat conversion formula, which normally applies a CP reduction to Pokémon exceeding 4,000 CP.

As a result, both Mega Evolutions are significantly stronger than many players originally expected.

Best Mewtwo Moveset

Fast move Choice : Psycho Cut vs Confusion

While Confusion has slightly higher theoretical DPS than Psycho Cut, Psycho Cut is generally considered the superior Fast Move for several reasons:

  • Psycho Cut generates significantly more Energy while also having a much shorter cooldown.
  • Outside of Psystrike, Mewtwo’s coverage Charged Moves benefit greatly from Psycho Cut’s rapid Energy generation during raids.
  • Mewtwo’s relatively modest bulk makes Psycho Cut better for dodging raid boss attacks.
  • In Party Play, Psycho Cut is one of the best Fast Moves for charging Party Power, making Mewtwo one of the strongest Party Play raid attackers.

For these reasons, most players prefer Psycho Cut.

Signature Move: Psystrike

Energy5045 (2-bar)

DPE (Damage per Energy)2.0

Psystrike is Mewtwo’s signature move and lives up to its Legendary status by being one of the strongest Charged Moves in both raids and PvP.

In raids, Psystrike deals 95 Power for only 50 Energy with a 2.5-second Duration, making it both fast and incredibly efficient. There is virtually no reason to replace it on a raid attacker.

In Trainer Battles, Psystrike’s 2.0 DPE matches some of the strongest Charged Moves in the game, including Megahorn, Leaf Blade, Focus Blast, Psycho Boost, Hydro Cannon, Meteor Mash, Sacred Fire, Luster Purge, Mist Ball, Meteor Beam, Fusion Bolt, Fusion Flare, and Darkest Lariat.

Best Second Charged Move: Shadow Ball or Ice Beam

Thanks to Psycho Cut’s exceptional Energy generation and Mewtwo’s enormous Attack stat, its secondary Charged Moves are also among the strongest raid coverage options available.

The two standout choices are Ice Beam and the legacy move Shadow Ball. See the raid performance section below for more details.

Mewtwo Raid Performance

Psychic-Type Attacker : Psystrike

As a Psychic-type attacker, Mewtwo is simply unmatched.

Its offensive performance is unrivaled, with only one drawback: Psychic-type attackers are not frequently needed in Legendary Raids.

Fighting-type: Counter + Focus Blast

With GO Fest 2026 introducing Counter to Mewtwo’s movepool, Mewtwo now has genuine potential as a Fighting-type attacker.

Compared to Mega Lucario, Mega Mewtwo X offers very similar DPS while boasting dramatically higher TDO.

In other words, Mega Mewtwo X can stay on the battlefield longer than virtually any other Fighting-type attacker while maintaining outstanding damage output.

The downside is that Mega Mewtwo X is still part Psychic-type, meaning it takes neutral damage from Dark-type attacks instead of resisting them like most Fighting-types. 😭

Ghost-type: Shadow Ball*

Mewtwo’s combination of Psycho Cut and Shadow Ball is exceptionally powerful.

Compared to Dawn Wings Necrozma, currently the strongest Ghost-type attacker, Mega Mewtwo Y performs surprisingly close.

Since Psycho Cut synergizes extremely well with Party Power, Mega Mewtwo Y becomes even stronger in coordinated raid groups, making Shadow Ball a highly recommended second Charged Move.

Ice-type: Ice Beam

The same principle applies to Mewtwo as an Ice-type attacker.

However, the original calculations assume that Party Power is not active. If Party Power is enabled in a standard 4-player Party Play group, the rankings change significantly.

Since Psycho Cut charges Party Power much faster than Ice Fang on White Kyurem, Mewtwo benefits more from the mechanic, allowing it to overtake White Kyurem in overall damage output.

Mewtwo can also function as a Fire-type attacker with Flamethrower and an Electric-type attacker with Thunderbolt. However, Mega Charizard Y and Regieleki are overwhelmingly stronger in those respective roles, so it is generally recommended to spend Mewtwo’s second Charged Move on Shadow Ball or Ice Beam instead.

Trainer Battles

Mewtwo’s Role in the Master League

Historically, Mewtwo almost always ran Psystrike alongside a flexible second Charged Move such as Shadow Ball, Focus Blast, or Ice Beam.

Following the buff to Shadow Ball, however, Shadow Ball has become the overwhelmingly preferred choice.

Mewtwo is used primarily in the Master League, and both the regular and Shadow versions are excellent choices. That said, Shadow Mewtwo is generally considered slightly stronger thanks to its increased damage output.

That said, Mewtwo no longer dominates the Master League as it once did. The current top-tier metagame is largely centered around Pokémon such as Zacian, Kyurem, Palkia, Xerneas, Ho-Oh, Zekrom, Reshiram, and Lunala, making the format far more matchup-dependent than in previous seasons.

Armored Mewtwo’s Role in the Ultra League

Like regular Mewtwo, Armored Mewtwo has access to Psystrike, but its movepool is different, with the standard moveset being Confusion + Psystrike + Dynamic Punch*.

Armored Mewtwo is incredibly bulky, but Confusion is a very slow Fast Move, making it vulnerable to opponents timing their switches and managing turns efficiently.

Even so, Armored Mewtwo performs exceptionally well in neutral matchups and can comfortably pressure many popular Ultra League Pokémon, including Lapras, Togekiss, Florges, Talonflame, and Blastoise.
