Most Dark-type Pokémon are dual-type combinations, making Thievul one of the relatively rare pure Dark-type Pokémon.
Among fully evolved Pokémon, only Alolan Persian, Umbreon, Mightyena, Absol, Darkrai, Liepard, Zoroark, Thievul, and Mabosstiff are pure Dark-types, making the typing unusually rare throughout the Pokémon series.
Like many early-route Pokémon from the main series games, Thievul has fairly modest base stats. As a result, its raid DPS is extremely low, so it is not worth discussing for raid performance.
Community Day Exclusive Move: Icy Wind
During the August 2026 Community Day, Thievul gains access to the Ice-type Charged Attack Icy Wind. (Personally, I expected it to receive Shadow Ball instead.)
Icy Wind is a utility-focused move that strongly suggests Thievul is intended primarily for PvP rather than raids.
Thanks to Ice-type’s excellent offensive coverage, Icy Wind gives Thievul a valuable niche that helps distinguish it from other Dark-type Pokémon.

PvP Performance
The Dark type has a surprisingly strong defensive typing.
Bug-type moves have never been particularly common, and the other weakness, Fighting, has become less prevalent in the current meta thanks to the high usage of Pokémon such as Mimikyu and Tinkaton.
At this point, it can be said that you mainly need to watch out for Fairy types. However, with the nerf to Charm, the pressure from Fairy-type Fast Moves has also decreased significantly compared to before.
That said, Foxly is considerably less bulky than Umbreon. However, when looking at their performance at 1,500 CP (Great League), Foxly is surprisingly close to Sableye.
This made Foxly somewhat lacking in competitive viability before, but with access to Icy Wind, it has gained a unique advantage that sets it apart from other Dark-type Pokémon.
Because it can lower the opponent’s Attack and create pressure to switch, it has the potential to be a particularly annoying Pokémon to deal with in restricted formats.
The image above compares Razor Leaf + Play Rough with Icy Wind + Play Rough based on 0-vs-0 shield simulations on the PvPoke simulation site, with the latter combination performing slightly better.
Its main use cases are the Great League and various Cup formats (restricted formats), where it is certainly worth considering as a wild-card pick that can shake up the meta.
Note: It is not recommended for the Ultra League (CP 2,500), as its low base stats leave it lacking in competitive viability.
